I was reminded why this unique effort is both sustainable, and worthy of donations:

“The Sudan Medical Relief Project (SMRP) grew out of work with Doctors Without Borders (MSF). Our program speaks to ongoing needs, not just emergencies. We focus on training national staff. Jill Seaman, medical director, has worked in this area of South Sudan for 20 years. That continuity means our opinions are sought as the new
government forms its health care plans. We hope that the government of South Sudan will take over primary care, letting the SMRP focus on special needs, with the help of ultrasonography. It is clear, however, that the political stability of Sudan is uncertain, and the clinic may suddenly be required to move. We have run from attacks before. A portable ultrasound would be something we could run with - thus the best of all options.”

Twenty Years, and Going Strong

In the summer of 1989, Jill Seaman finished her residency, studied at the London School of Tropical Medicine, played her lute at my wedding, and moved to Sudan with Doctors Without Borders. She never expected that she would be working there 20 years later, or that she would become a local legend. In 1989, Sudan was the other side of the world. Now it is her second home.

We celebrate 20 years of commitment, 20 years of growth. We hope and pray that the next 20 years will bring the lasting peace that allows development to prosper with fewer distractions.

Sudan offers no dull years, and rare dull moments. Those are appreciated; we all hope for more. With many thanks for your support, whether you have been part of this for one year or twenty.

The Alaska Sudan Medical Project (AMSP) formed
a separate organization specifically to suppport
Jill’s efforts in Old Fangak by building a clinic and
digging wells. Half the town helped unload the
barge full of supplies.
